Safety First for Gulf Related and its Partners
November 2016 marks 23 months of construction work on Al Maryah Central – Abu Dhabi’s newest, mixed-use mall that is promising to redefine the concept of retail as we know it.
And while the architecture, design, placemaking and activation are all extraordinary elements of this next-generation shopping, dining and entertainment destination, what’s equally as impressive is Gulf Related’s approach to delivering an asset that showcases exemplar quality, health and safety outcomes.
Bob Wolstenholme, Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety Manager of Construction Management for Al Maryah Central, joined Gulf Related 2 years ago with one objective – to improve the relationship between authorities, developers and contractors to deliver an end-to-end approach to health and safety.
“Gulf Related and its partners have made, and will continue to make, a significant investment in health and safety. By having the right processes, policies and procedures in place, we have been able to mitigate a number of risks. However, strong relationships need to be built and sustained between all parties to achieve and maintain our high standards.”
Gulf Related, along with its main contractor Multiplex, has just celebrated the achievement of more than 10 million man hours with no lost time due to injury. This is a significant achievement, due in no small part to the dedicated team of health and safety managers, officers, supervisors and manpower who are committed to achieving a best-in-class health and safety record.
“Contractually, we have a number of mechanisms in place with our partners and suppliers to ensure that what we are doing is best practice. We have also introduced a robust incentive scheme that encourages our staff to be safety heroes and safety leaders by identifying risks and working collaboratively to safely resolve them.”
Bob and his team stay abreast with Safety Legislation and Abu Dhabi’s safety management system and continually drive, support and encourage contractors to do the same.
Trend tracking and observations have helped to create a culture of accountability, so that safety remains top of the agenda for Gulf Related and Al Maryah Central’s construction team.
